An aerial view of golden sands and turquoise waters along the Budva Riviera

What's your favourite beach?

That's a tough one! Montenegro boasts some of the best under-the-radar beaches in the Mediterranean. Think gorgeous golden sands and quaint pebbly inlets, all washed by the sparkling Adriatic Sea. It's like looking at a real life postcard. Each beach comes with its own unique character too, perfect for beach bums who like to mix it up.

If I had to narrow it down to a region, I'd say Budva's Riviera takes the trophy in the beauty stakes. Stretching out for 35km, the sun-drenched coastline is stitched together with a string of sand and pebbly bays. There's something for everyone too, with small coves ideal for couples looking for a bit of quiet and seclusion, or wider beaches with more entertainment for families who want to keep the kids busy! Plus many of the beaches are accessorised with parasols and sunloungers.

Must-see historic attraction?

History is where Montenegro comes into its own. The whole country is dotted with distinctive old towns and ancient architecture, so if you have a penchant for peering into the past – you'll love every second of your holiday here!

Historic Kotor Old Town backed by brooding mountains in Montenegro

If there's one place that simply can't be missed, it has to be the Medieval Old Town of Kotor. Crowned as part of the UNESCO World Heritage clan, it's recognised for its huge historical and architectural significance. Dating all the way back to the 9th century and taking a mind-blowing 600 years to complete, a keen eye will be able to spot relics of both Roman and Venetian rule. All encircled by famous fortified walls, you'll find a tangled web of cobbled streets, museums, squares, churches and palaces just waiting to be explored once you step inside.

Top village or town to visit?

Herceg Novi is a sightseer's paradise and one of the top town's to add to your Montenegro itinerary (if you're not already staying in one of our villas that is!) Awash with all kinds of historical and cultural heritage, it's the gateway to the gorgeous Bay of Kotor. Blessed with almost constant sunshine and washed by the azure Adriatic Sea, it comes complete with its very own Old Town too.

Perfect day out for families?

Budva's Aqua park is the perfect answer to keeping cool on a sizzling summer's day! Raised above the town with incredible views of the coastline below, your little water babies will love the seven high-speed slides, large wave pool and lazy river. Plus – if your kids are old enough to take care of themselves, there's a massage room for parents in need of a little pampering! Kitted out with all kinds of entertainment and eateries, this is a family-fun day that takes cares of itself.

Best spot to shop?

Kotor is well-known for its daily food market, which pops up every morning throughout the summer season. Stocked with home grown goods and freshly harvested produce, follow your nose around the maze of stalls and see what takes your fancy! Highlights include handmade Turkish delight, fresh fruit and vegetables, salted meats, wines, liquors and an incredible array of local cheeses.

If you're looking for a more modern take on retail therapy, head to Budva. Here you'll find familiar high-street fashion stores and a brand-spanking new shopping centre, while the Old Town is lined with boutiques that beckon browsers with designer names.

Where's best for quiet and seclusion?

Lustica Peninsula is ideal for couples looking to escape the more 'touristy crowds' and experience local life first-hand. The region is still relatively untouched, so peace and quiet is a guarantee for those wanting to 'get away from it all'. With a go-slow pace of life and a taste of authentic Montenegro that's hard to resist, the emphasis here is on seclusion and privacy. Plus the scenery speaks for itself!

The big one! What's your favourite villa?

It's got to be Villa Rose Garden in Herceg Novi. The setting is second-to-none and the views are simply spectacular! I can just imagine sitting on the balcony in the summer and staring out across the glistening seascapes. The villa sleeps 6, so there's plenty of space for everyone – plus the swimming pool is a really good size for some family fun in the sun.
