Alberobello is one of the most visited towns in Italy and was granted Unesco World Heritage site status in 1966. The old part of town, Monti, is filled with hundreds of the typical Puglian Trulli - the conical stone houses that can be found scattered throughout the Puglian countryside.
Many of the Trulli have been converted to gift shops and restaurants and in high season the town becomes a very popular attraction for day trippers.
The newer, more modern part of the town, Aia Piccola, has also been granted protected status and more restaurants and shops can be found here with slightly less bustling crowds.

Castellana Grotte is a buzzing little country town famous for its caves or "grotte", after which the town is named. As the caves are on the edge of town though, in high season Castellana is not packed with day trippers.
The town of Castellana is delightful in a way that only old world Italian towns can be. It stands on a hilltop overlooking sweeping plains and vineyards. Its oldest street was built during the 17th century so you'll be able to stroll past the ornately frescoed Palazzo Longo and enjoy the fascinating little shops and bustling restaurants. Ancient churches, picture postcard piazzas and clock towers add to the charm.
The UNESCO World Heritage town of Alberobello is close by and is renowned for its concentration of 'Trulli Houses' that are unique to Puglia. There are a number of noted towns in the region all worth visiting for their beautiful historic centres including Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino and the famous 'White City' of Ostuni.
