This ancient town sits at the foot of Mount Etna on the beautiful east coast of Sicily. Acireale boasts wonderful baroque architecture, whilst sights include the Zelantea art gallery, the baroque church of San Sebastiano and the neo-gothic St Peter’s Basilica. The magnificent Piazza del Duomo is a great place to appreciate some of the best of the town’s architecture. Acireale has been a spa town since Roman times, and the area is also known for its mineral water. The countryside surrounding Acireale is dramatic, with many volcanic landscapes surrounding the slopes of Mount Etna, whilst there are also many fragrant olive and lemon groves dotted around the area.
